The Zen Project’s tips for managing stress: Breathing Exercises

Did you know that April is Stress Awareness Month? According to a recent study by the Mental Health Foundation, 74% of people report feeling so stressed that they’ve been overwhelmed or unable to cope. We’re here to help!

Our friends at The Zen Project are offering a series of Zen Tips throughout April to relieve stress and help you find your inner zen. Try this simple box breathing practice that will help to quieten your thoughts a little and bring some balance to the mind:

  • Find a comfortable seated position, gently rest your hands on your lap and close your eyes
  • Begin to bring your awareness to your breathing, noticing the in-breath and the out-breath
  • Now breathe in through your nose as you slowly count to 4 in your head
  • Then hold your breath for a count of 4
  • Breathe out for another count of 4
  • And hold the breath out for a count of 4
  • Continue for a few rounds
