Mary Colwell discusses with Patrick Barkham how to shift the dial in both conservation and education. Mary has put the beautiful and endangered Curlew on the map by walking 500 miles to raise awareness about its decline, and wrote a book called Curlew Moon. She also persuaded the government to instigate a GCSE in Natural History, putting nature education into the heart of secondary schools. Both required facing opposition and apathy, and battling through establishments that didn’t want to know.
