First and foremost, Helen is a physicist. But she’s also an author, broadcaster, oceanographer, bubble enthusiast and passionate advocate for the natural world.

She is passionate about conveying the beauty and ingenuity of the physical world around us, in particular the ocean, and the perspective on the world that science provides. She is the author of multiple acclaimed books including Storm in a Tea Cup (2016) and Blue Machine: How the Ocean Shapes our World (2023), the latter winning the prestigious Wainwright Prize for Writing on Conservation in 2024.

Helen is the ‘science anchor’ of The Cosmic Shambles Network and is a regular presenter of various podcasts, live events and documentaries. She also currently hosts environmental series Rare Earth on BBC Radio 4 alongside Tom Heap.
