The Antlers ~ The Word Arena ~ Sunday

Jul 18, 2010 Brooklyn-based indie band The Antlers  played a selection of songs from their debut concept album Hospice which was released in August 2009.

They played both singles 'Bear' and 'Sylvia', receiving an emotional response from the crowd. Frontman and guitarist Peter Silberman's strong vocals together with intense distorted guitar and drumming created a powerful atmosphere which warranted comparisons to Arcade Fire.

Although this set didn't include the instrumentation (accordion, trumpet) which features on the album, the band maintained their evocative and provoking sound.

Paul Greengrass Q&A ~ Film & Music Arena ~ Saturday

Jul 17, 2010 In what is probably the biggest coup of the weekend, the Film & Music Arena plays host to one of the most important directors working today.

Not content with re-invigorating every action movie made in the last half decade (even the latest Hollywood behemoth, 'Inception' boasts 'Bourne' style action sequences) Paul Greengrass' main goal is to make people think.

From his first foray into "the thinking man's mainstream cinema", 'Sunday, Bloody Sunday,' with which he waxes lyrical about James Nesbitt's nervousness about taking on the part, up to his latest, 'Green Zone', which just might be the boldest, and certainly biggest, attack on the West's foreign policy in Iraq, every word the director says is attended to by a packed arena.

Interspersed with clips from his movies and questions from Simon Mayo the Q&A is a must for anyone with a passing interest in intelligent, thought provoking film.

With the content being what it is, the mood is often sombre, but for film lovers and wannabe film makers this is a masterclass in modern cinema like no other.

Sadler's Wells presents Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake (Act II) ~ The Waterfront Stage ~ Saturday

Jul 17, 2010 Matthew Bourne's long-awaited contemporary version of Swan Lake was announced as Latitude's most anticipated and coveted of performances across the weekend. Noone would ever have suggested anything other than the magnificent, ethereal (and of course, water-laden) location of The Waterfront Stage for Act II of the famed ballet.

Following 2008's award-winning Dorian Gray, Bourne has set himself a high benchmark to continue the success of a spectacular run of the traditional ballet, composed way back in 1875, and first choreographed by Bourne in 1995. The dance features famously in the 2000 film Billy Elliot.

What was seen today upon the beautiful jetty-stage surrounded by water, woods and forest was Act II, a startling struggle between a swan and the prince, where both performers gave powerful and unnerving performances.

As the crowds of adults and children alike will concur, Swan Lake still holds its crown as the most spectacular and beautiful ballet of all.
