The xx ~ The Word Arena ~ Saturday

Jul 18, 2010

Minimalist riffs and deep bass that can only be perfected by London's The xx proved one of the biggest hits so far at Latitude this year. The three-piece played the cavernous Word Arena, a huge space to fill with sound in contrast to their very recent more modest housings.

After releasing their debut album 'xx' early last year that is already being regarded as worth of the Mercury Music Prize 2010, the band suffered a loss when their keyboardist left last year. This has undoubtedly not shaken their rapid rise to success. Notably, Shakira covered 'Islands' at this year's Glastonbury.

The xx's headline show last night was both delightful and oppressive, something which Romy, Oliver and Jamie seem to revel in. Who knows; we may see them on the Obelisk Arena this time next year.
